Many health insurance companies recognize platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, injections as an experimental form of treatment, meaning they do not recognize it as a conventional or proven form of treatment, and will not cover the injections. Because PRP is a newer method of treatment, it is still in the developmental stage, and insurance companies argue that there have not been enough clinical trials or tests performed to establish enough efficacy. While many researchers are working hard to prove the effectiveness and safety of PRP injections, insurance companies have yet to recognize it as something more than a “fee for service” type of treatment. Hopefully, we will see an expansion of coverage in the near future from insurance companies.
