Can a spinal fusion surgery affect the brain?
It is possible for spinal fusion surgery to affect the brain. There is a condition called pseudohypoxic brain swelling (PHBS), more recently known as postoperative intracranial hypotension-associated venous congestion (PIHV). This is a rare and potentially fatal post operation complication where the cerebral spinal fluid rapidly drains leading to venous cerebral congestion. There is also the potential for a Dural Tear. Tears occurs when the thin spinal covering is torn during surgery. Surgeons usually notice these tears and repair them during the operation.
It is important to talk to your medical provider about the risks and benefits of any surgery.
