One of our clients realized that she’d made a costly mistake when choosing her insurance coverage after she was injured in a car accident.
The Mistake
Our client chose to add Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay) to her auto policy instead of Personal Injury Protection coverage (PIP) when she chose her auto insurance.
Why is This a Mistake?
MedPay coverage, which pays medical bills after an accident, has to be paid back to your insurance company if you settle a claim with the other driver, unlike PIP coverage, which can also be used to pay medical bills, but DOES NOT have to be paid back.
When our client settled her claim with the other driver (who was at fault), she had to repay $10,000 to her insurance company for use of MedPay. If she would have had PIP coverage instead, that $10,000 would have stayed where it belonged: in her pocket.
