Icy roads cause dangerous driving conditions, but black ice is a little bit different from regular ice on the roadways. Black ice is a thin layer of transparent ice on the road or on walkways. Its transparent nature means you can see the road below it, so you may not realize you’re driving on ice until it’s too late.
Black ice is particularly hard to see at night and in shadowy areas, like under a bridge. Stay safe and alert if you have to get on the road during icy conditions. Go slow and steady to avoid losing control of your vehicle and getting in a wreck.
Speaking of bridges, always use caution when driving on bridges during winter weather. Since bridges are elevated, the cold air can freeze it from all sides, including the bottom. Bridges are especially dangerous to drive on during icy conditions, so be careful.
